The City Resilience Program of the World Bank pursues the enhancement of resilience in cities with the participation of the private sector through capital mobilization for the implementation of measures. EO4SD DRR project is collaborating with CRP by providing a systematic and comparative analysis of subsidence hazard in nine selected cities and a series of Capacity Building actions to the World Bank teams of each city.
To date, there have been three workshops, being the first one on 29th October 2020 to the World Bank team in charge of DRM issues at Beira (Mozambique). It was followed by a second workshop to stakeholders and users of Vinh Long (Vietnam) on 10th November 2020, and a third workshop with users of Khulna and Barisal (Bangladesh) on 25th November 2020.
The predominant profile of the attendees was Disaster Risk Management specialists and senior consultants of the World Bank. In these sessions they receive information on how satellite technology can be used to assess effectively and monitor subsidence for wide areas and during long periods.
The schema presented relies in the provision of very precise and detailed analysis with proprietary solutions (like InSARViz from GISAT or Rheticus by Planetek ) and hosted services on Cloud platforms that represent complementary, entry level and affordable solutions also used for discovery and training (ESA’s Geohazards Exploitation Platform).
The value of detecting hot spot areas of subsidence as a primary source for further detailed analysis or ground verifications was found very interesting for the service uptake.
